WHAT SETS ME APART AS A TUTOR?

Hello! I’m Shelton. I have two bachelor’s degrees (Chemical Engineering and Agricultural and Biological Engineering) both from the University of Florida (UF). After working in corporate for several years, I decided to return to school to obtain a PhD.

BIO:

While I was an engineer and a PhD student, I also worked as a tutor. I did tutoring on the side because I am passionate about helping others achieve their academic and life goals. Four years ago, I decided to become a high school teacher where I taught AP Statistics and Calculus. In addition, I am also a content tutor for the University of Florida’s Athletic Association where I tutor student athletes in college level math courses.

I have experience teaching/tutoring students in Math subjects ranging from 6th grade to college-level math courses. Overall, I have 15 years of relevant experience and I also hold a Florida Teacher’s Certification. I have a very good track record for helping students improve their math skills. I believe the combination of my engineering and educational work experience makes me uniquely qualified to help others achieve their goals. I not only try to help students improve in their math skills, but I strive to show students how to apply what they are learning to real-life applications.

As an engineer, I applied my math knowledge everyday and I believe that students learn better when they can apply what they are learning in a practical way. I also believe that I am an effective communicator. Teaching/tutoring is an art form. Just because someone may know how to something, doesn’t meant that they can explain or impart that knowledge to someone one else in a way that could be easily understood.

My years of experience have given me an opportunity to refine my teaching strategies and communication skills I find that I am able to relate to others so that they are able to easily learn. I would love the opportunity to work any person who is willing to learn. There is nothing more gratifying that having a student telling you that he/she really enjoyed learning from me and that I made the content more understandable. I look forward to working with you in the future.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions! I look forward to helping you.
